Course Requirements

1. Prerequisites:

Before beginning training for the Class 4 Instructor Rating, an applicant must hold a valid Commercial or higher Pilot Licence and must have a minimum of 20 hours of instruction time.  All of the training for the Flight Instructor Rating must be obtained from the holder of a valid Class 1 Instructor Rating.

2. Training Requirements:

a)            Flight Training -

Dual   30 Hours (minimum)

Including  -  5 hours on teaching cross-country navigation skills.

5 hours on teaching instrument flight skills.

Solo    The PLH no longer specifies a solo flying component in the training for a Flight Instructor Rating. For planning and budget purposes, some solo practice (5 – 10 hours) will usually be acquired during the course.

b)            Ground Training

The Ground School required for the Instructor Rating involves a minimum of 25 hours and this is typically acquired in one on one sessions with the Class 1 Instructor. The Transport Canada Study and Reference Guide provides a detailed breakdown of the topics to be covered and trainee instructors will be provided with one when starting the course.

3. Testing Requirements:

a) Flight Test

Before attempting the Instructor Flight Test, all of the Training Requirements must have been completed and the applicant must present a Flight Crew Licence – Application for Rating certified by a Class 1 Instructor.

b) Written Examinations

There are two written examinations required for the Instructor Rating – Class 4. In order to write either of these exams, an applicant must have completed 50% of the Flight Training Requirements, all of the required Ground Training, and must have a letter of recommendation from a Class 1 Flight Instructor certifying that he/she is deemed to have acquired a satisfactory level of knowledge to attempt the exams.

The pass mark for both exams is 70%.
